These bags are reversible, but have the girls pick out a main (outer) fabric and lining (inside).
Fold both pieces, main and lining, in half long ways, with right sides together and pin. Sew sides together. I just lined up the edge of the fabric with my foot and that was my seam allowance.
Press
side seems open and press the bottom of bag to form a crease on both
the main and lining fabric.
Now
to make the boxed corners. Take a bottom corner, with right sides
together, and line up the sewn seem with the creased bottom of the bag.
It should make a triangle. Pin it. Lay it flat and measure 2”
from the top of the triangle (see below) and draw a line across the
fabric (see picture below). Repeat this on both corners of the main
fabric and lining (4 total).
Now sew along the line (on all four corners) and then cut about 1/2 " from the seam.
Flip
your bags right side out and press open the boxed corners.
Pin
the right side of ribbon to the right side of the main fabric (In the picture below the ribbon is actually pinned to the lining, not the main fabric - that was a lesson learned while making it). The
ribbon is placed 3” from the side seam and leave a 1/4” over
hang. Pin other ribbon to the opposite side.
Insert
one bag into the other, with right sides together and line up the top
and pin the top.
Sew
the main and lining together at the top, leaving a 2” opening.
Pull
the bags through the opening so that right sides are out. The put
the lining inside the main fabric and press the top to make a nice
crease. The sew around the top of bag to hold everything in place.
I sewed about 1/4” from the top of the bag, reinforcing where the
ribbon is.
I did
a rectangle around where the ribbon is to reinforce. You can do this
if you have time and you think the girl you are working with can do
it. Otherwise just backstitch over the ribbon.
And you are done!!!
